Jason Gets His Chompers!

Someone call the Tooth Fairy and tell her to start saving!

A few days ago Jason started to get a little bit more irritable than we are used to. He has been drooling for the past 3 months, so we fully expect teeth in the near future. Well the other night we lay Jason down for bed and he just won't calm down. Matt figures if he isn't hungry, maybe he has gas or his teeth are bothering him. Matt goes to massage Jason's gum and feels something unusual. "Casey. is that a tooth I feel?" So I go and inspect his gums and sure enough, Jason's first tooth has pushed through!

To celebrate this big milestone, we let Jason gnaw on a piece of steak the next night. He LOVED it!

The next couple of days he was still kinda cranky. Again, Matt went to massage his gums and felt another bump. Could he possibly have his second tooth already? Sure enough tooth number two is shining through! We have been letting Jason eat "real food." He prefers it in a mesh bag, where he can feed himself and I don't have to worry about him choking on pieces.

Just the other morning I cut up a bunch of strawberries and gave them to Jason- he wouldn't take them off of a spoon, nor does he like to bite the strawberry itself. So in the mesh bag they went. He absolutely loves strawberries. So much, I had to give him seconds. The first time I gave Jason strawberries I was a nervous wreck, because there is a high rate for allergies with them. But He has not shown any signs of food related allergies.

He loves lima beans, steak, bread (which he was chewing on at a restaurant the other night- making a slobbery mess out of the bread), strawberries, bananas, and even cheddar brats.

Matt and I had brats for dinner last night, and out of curiosity I put a chunk of bratwurst in his bag. Jason started to devour it. When I took it away (because it isn't the best food choice for a baby) he pitched the biggest fit I have witnessed from him. Lesson learned... Jason likes yummy food too!

6 Month Dr Visit

Baby Spartacus had his 6 month wellness appointment the other day. Every appointment I fill out a questionnaire that tallies up on a scale to see how well he has developed in different categories such as: Problem Solving, Fine Motor, Gross Motor, Communication etc.  Jason scored in all categories to be on schedule. He grabs both of his feet, he tries to sit up- in fact he pretty much can hold a crunch position for several seconds (I should be copying him to get a good core workout in). When he is in a sitting position he can stay there with a little bit of a wobble. He loves to bounce in his doorway Jumpy Seat.

Spartacus weighs 17 lbs 13 oz and is 26.75 inches tall- he is in the 52% for both measurements. The Dr. says he looks great and has no concerns with him.

Matt was able to get out of work and come to this baby appointment and meet Jason's doctor. Matt is very eager and hands on with Jason. He comes to help with his shots which takes away some pressure from me. Jason had 4 shots, 2 in each leg. He definitely does not like being poked. He cried hard for 30 seconds, but as soon as the 4th shot was done, Matt picked him up and he calmed down immediately. The last set of shots he didn't calm so quickly, so this was a major relief.

Baby Spartacus was back to a happy baby right away and stayed his normal self all day. When we went to put him in bed I brushed my cheek across his forehead and noticed that he felt much warmer than he did a few minutes ago. We took Jason's temperature I swear at least 10 times between an ear thermometer and a pacifier thermometer. The first reading was 102.2 with a others reading around 101.6. I had baby Motrin and baby Tylenol on hand, but I called the ER to make sure he didn't need to be seen. They ER couldn't give me medical advice over the phone so I called the nurse hotline. Since his temperature wasn't over 103.9 and he was in his normal happy mood, not lethargic, or anything out of the norm an ER visit wasn't necessary. We gave him some Motrin and waited until his temperature dropped down to 99 before going to sleep that night.

Let me tell you, baby having a fever is a tad bit terrifying. I know fevers mean that his vaccines are working properly, but he was toeing the line of a high grade fever and that is just scary! Jason fortunately was back to normal in about an hour and haven't had any problems since.

Jason's Halloween

Halloween was a very busy day for us. A good friend of ours retired, and Matt was a part of the ceremony as a Side Boy. Our friend Rob, who was retiring, is a Heilo Pilot and a dear friend. Jason and I dressed up and headed out the door to watch not only his beautiful retirement, but a surprise vow renewal! Very happy we could be there for Rob and his beautiful wife Lesley.

After the retirement, Matt and I donned our surgical attire and went to the base Spooktacular as Dr. Matson. The idea of Matt and I being YOUR doctor is a scary thought! We had gone to a birthday party back in August that was themed Star Wars, so we already had a costume for Jason. Even though we danced around the idea of changing his costume when we were at Party City in Virginia, we stuck with our original idea. Jason went as baby Chewbacca! I entered him in a costume contest, some little boy dressed as Chucky won.

We didn't go trick or treating- even though one house on base was giving out Sangria to the parents! After Spooktacular we headed out to the Agora Hotel to celebrate Robs retirement. The day was long and full of joy and we look forward to the many Halloweens to come.

Jason Goes Back to America

After a very successful trip to the States in August, Matt and I already had plans in the works to come back home in October. We were getting word that a handful of people were wanting to come out to Italy in September to visit with us. Matt, who was already homesick for America, knew he wouldn't be able to take the time off to accommodate 3 visits in one month. We decided early on that we will make the trip home, this way everyone who hasn't met Jason and can't make it across the pond will be able to love on him.

The morning came to drive to Rome, park the car and get our tickets. We had booked Jason as a Lap seat but prayed for an empty seat between Matt and I so we could bring Jason's car seat on board and free up our laps. The gate agent was kind enough to block the empty seat between us so no one could book that seat last minute, thankfully there were plenty of open seats. We flew the 10 hour flight to Charlotte, NC had a layover and then off to Norfolk. Jason did great! he got antsy the last flight, but can you blame him?

Dad picked us up, took us home and then back to the airport the following morning. We flew into Chicago and were pleasantly pleased with a warm welcome from my Aunt Julie who happened to be in town. She covered Jason in kisses while Matt and I grabbed our luggage. Jason was happy as can be to meet his Aunt Julie! Matt's dad, Bumpa, picked us up and got to meet his grandbaby for the first time. We stopped for lunch and Bumpa couldn't stop staring and smiling at baby boy.

We spent 3 very short days in Illinois- fortunately we flew which saved us major travel time. Over the three days Jason got to hang out with his Uncle Luke who bought him a very cool Blackhawks Jersey. Matt's mom, Nana came running upstairs to meet Jason and took over his wardrobe change. She was in Nana Heaven! Nana hung out for the night and got in as much cuddle time as possible. She knows very well they don't stay little for long, so she soaked up the little time they had together.

Jason was showered in gifts, ranging from a horse onsie from Mia, Sam, Rachel and Aaron, to a balloon and Blackhawks hat from Uncle Phil, Sue, Maddie and Sam. By the way- he loved his first balloon! He bounced it, swatted it and just loved to stare at it. It was pure entertainment for everyone. Almost everyone from Matt's side of the family was able to come and spend time snuggling and loving on Jason. He finally got to meet his cousins Devin and Skyelar, who adore him.

Much of our time was spent staying low key, enjoying to company of family, snapping pictures. The time in Illinois went by fast and we had to say "see you later" with tears in our eyes. Hopefully we will be flooded with Illinois house guests when we buy a house as soon as we transfer to our next duty station.

Flight number 4 of this entire trip was back to Virginia. Dad picked us up again, and while he waited for us to get our luggage he played with Jason. The one thing I think my dad loves more than being a dad, is being a grand-daddy! He is the happiest person on this planet when he talks to Jason. Matt and I settled in quickly at dad's house. We have a routine down now. My Aunt Mary invited us over for dinner which was nice. We weren't ready to dive into fast food, especially since Matt had his weigh in as soon as we got back to Italy. It was another night of just family, filled with laughter and happiness. While we were back in Virginia Beach, we checked out a couple of neighborhoods that we may have interest in when it comes down to buying a house in the near future.

Dad and his neighbor Susie offered to watch baby J for us one night so we could go on a date. It was much needed to get some "just us" time. I feel I did very well leaving baby boy so I could go on a date with Matt. Neither of us called or texted to see how he was doing, and I didn't feel anxious about the situation at all. I know if they need me, they know how to reach me. As expected Jason was happy and in one piece when we returned home.

Dad had a cookout, and invited a bunch of friends to come over, meet Jason and hang out. It was a very nice turn out. Uncle Chase was holding Jason and having a "brewski" when Jason grabbed hold of his bottle and started to gnaw on it. It was kinda precious and funny.

As usual, the time flew by and we were boarding our plane to go back to Italy. Again, Jason did exceptionally well and slept the entire flight back. So to the lady who was sitting beside me and got up and moved... Thank you for the elbow room. Hope the people behind you didn't kick your seat too much, because Jason was an angel. As my mom says, if a cranky child is the worse thing on a flight- it's a good day! AMEN

Four Month Check Up

Took Jason in for his 4 month check up this week. He had a small patch of rough skin on his shoulder that didn't bother him for a couple of weeks now. Since it didn't hurt or itch, it wasn't of much concern. Dr Norwood gave us a steroid cream and after two days the rough patch was gone.

Other than that Jason is very healthy. He weighs 15.73 lbs and is 26 inches tall. He marks in the 80th percentile for height and 64th percentile for weight.

Yesterday Jason received his 4 month immunization shots. Only two shots this time instead of three. Both of them in his right thigh. I placed a soothing machine that vibrates against his thigh before the shot to help "numb" his leg. The corpsman poked him quick and startled Jason very bad. She went pretty deep too. Jason cried pretty hard and loud. Matt couldn't console him this time like he did at the two month appointment. So I took over and was able to bounce and distract him to calm him down. He recovered well and didn't shed a single tear the rest of the day.

I wanted to give him a lollipop for being so good about his shots! We gave him a couple mL of Tylenol just incase. He was in great spirits all through the night. This mommy was loving the extra snuggles!

Hoping his next round of shots go smooth in a few months!

Jason is on a roll!

I didn't realize how difficult it was going to be to sit down and write a blog with a baby. I thought I would get my blog in while Jason naps. That just doesn't happen. Hopefully I can take advantage of being awake before Jason and get some more updates in.

Enough with the rambling, Jason had a big weekend. Thursday around 2:30 pm I had him on his play mat, doing "tummy time" when I hear a thud. Not a loud one, just a noticeable one. I look up from what I was doing and saw Jason had flipped over! From his front to his back. This means I can't have Jason on the couch and run to get a drink without moving him to the ground first. It's a big milestone for babies, and at 4 months 1 week he caught us off guard. Matt missed it because he was at work, but over the weekend Jason showed his daddy his new trick. We even got it on film.

Jason also got to try his first solid foods on Saturday. He loved his first option of Sweet Carrots. Turned his face orange =] He was not fond of Beef in Beef Broth (I tried it, it was disgusting). After having some carrots I switched to beef and he gagged on it. I tried it before giving to him, and let me tell you... groooooooss! But I wanted to see what he thought about it. The decision is unanimous, and it went in the garbage. I'll give him some real beef and make sure it's mushed good so he can eat it.

Jason kicks his feet and gets very excited when he sees food on his spoon. He opens his mouth and leans in for the bite. The food will swish in his mouth a bit and he spits a tiny bit out with almost every bite, but Mom and Dad are here to catch his mess. Really, he isn't that messy, SO FAR! He's blown a few bubbles, splattering here and there, Or he will stick his hands into his mouth with food on his tongue. Nothing baby wipes and some Lysol can't handle. He is allowed to eat anything we eat except honey. Even peanut butter and strawberries. Apparently during the years of delaying foods that cause allergies for babies saw an increase of food allergies instead of a decrease, so Dr. says to let him try them. Makes me nervous and want to buy an Epi pen, but I'll introduce them slowly.  Below is a link to watch him eat.

Operation Papal Visit

After having my dad fly out to Italy to see Jason and explore with us, I wanted so badly for the rest of my family to meet baby Spartacus. I asked Matt about going home in August a few months ago but told him not to sugarcoat it and tell me his honest opinion about Jason and I flying to the States. Well I asked for honest, and I got honest. "I'd rather you wait until October," he said. Fair enough. You are my husband, and the father of my child, you have a say in this and I respect your wishes, and I never brought it up again.

Well that last part isn't true. I didn't bring it back up, until a week before I wanted to fly home. I had been talking to my mom and my sister earlier that day and I got an aching to surprise my sister the day before my nieces' first birthday. It was Wednesday and her party next Saturday. I know my sister wants to be able to drop everything and fly out to Italy to love on Jason but it just isn't possible with her job being a full time gig (no last minute call outs are allowed for her). On top of that she has a soon to be 1 and 3 year old as well as her oldest who is a preteen and thinks he can run the world no problem (love you B!)

My mom was able to make it out here fortunately when Jason was born but I know she didn't get enough lovin' in; honestly, is there ever enough time to love on a baby? So I know she would be thrilled to see baby J too. And lets not forget that I am a daddy's girl and would love to be able to surprise him as well with a visit.

Back to the not bringing up flying home in August thing again. I dropped the subject for a couple of months, and after talking to my mom and sister I figured I would bring it back up. Matt had been out with the guys for "Man Night" and had a couple drinks, I had no intention on changing his mind but wondered how easy it would be after he had a drink or two. "Hey Maaaaaaatt. What do you think about me flying home next week?" I'm thinking there is no way in hell he will agree to this. "Only if you don't fly standby," he responded. Wait a minute. Did he just give me permission to buy a ticket and go home?! Is he out of his mind?! "I don't do full price tickets, standby is the only way I will go," I rebutted. We talked about flying home on a Military flight which was my preference since there was a flight home next Friday but my chances on making that flight were low. I brought up flying stand by under my mom's benefits from Rome to DC (which is what I did last year to surprise my family for my sister's C-section). We called it a day and went to bed. I was okay if I didn't go home, but it sure would be nice.

Thursday morning Matt goes to work, when he comes home I asked him if he started the paperwork for me to catch the military flight. He did not. It wouldn't get up his chain of command quick enough. Well I guess flying standby from Rome to DC is my only option left but Matt wasn't having that. He had researched flights while at work and found a couple of affordable options. I'm not paying full price for a ticket. So I called mom and she told me that the flight I wanted was over sold by 28 seats, but there were seats still for sale. Matt was sold, I wasn't. I couldn't pay full price for a ticket. I was going to be nauseous if I had to enter my credit card number and click confirm. I didn't have it in me to be so selfish when we were going to fly home in just two more months. Matt told my mom to buy the tickets then I would HAVE to transfer her the money. Ultimately Matt turned to me and said, "If you don't make a flight home, you will be devastated." And he was right. Mom booked my flight and Jason and I were flying to DC in a WEEK!

Since no one knew we were coming home, mom and I called the surprise Operation Papal Visit.

Matt took off work and drove us to the airport, I really didn't want to take the train with the baby, his car seat, his diaper bag, and two bags of luggage. He was able to go past Passport Control to Security with us. I was so nervous about going through security because I was wearing Jason in an Ergo Carrier, and I didn't know if I needed to take him out of the carrier and put it through x-ray. Putting on an Ergo Carrier one handed is not something that I have mastered while holding Jason and I wasn't planning on the Italian TSA agents to be super helpful. On top of that I was nervous about the process of having 2 bottles of pre-made 8 ounce formula, that once opened is only good for two hours. I crossed my fingers that I could wear him through x-ray and the formula would not be a hassle. Apparently Italian TSA is not as strict as TSA in America. They took the formula, x-rayed it, let me walk through with Jason in his back pack with just a little pat down between the two of us and that was it. I stressed over nothing!

I asked the gate agent if they board families first,  to which they do; however, they never called families to board first, so I cut the line after first class boarded and was given the okay to go ahead on the plane. I met some wonderful flight attendants that my mom emailed prior to my flight, and a couple of them worked with my mom or knew her from Facebook. Jan, my favorite person on the flight recalled my mom posting on Facebook about me delivering Jason even though I told her not to post anything. She was so happy to meet Jason after having read all of moms "non-updates."

I sat window seat with Jason on my lap, and two Italian teenagers sat beside me. They weren't of any help when it came time to Jason getting hungry and me not being ready for him. Asking the kid next to me to open a bottle and pull off the aluminum cover was just the first headache while dealing with a hungry crying baby. It didn't help that he had no concept of personal space and also elbowed Jason's head while he was sleeping not once but twice, putting him into a crying fit. I made sure the return flight was an aisle seat so I could get up and move about with Jason whenever I needed to console him.

Other then that, Jason did amazingly well on his first flight. It was 10 hours long, he was in my lap the entire time with the exception of a sweet lady behind me wanting to hold him for 20 minutes while I got everything together for landing, and of course amazing Jan the flight attendant entertained him, let me be kid free for a few, and helped me clean bottles. Did I mention she was amazing? My angel in the sky for sure.

Once landed mom picked me up in Dulles and we went to her new house to spend the night. Mom was soaking in her Mimi time. He's much chunkier than he was at a week old, weighing almost twice his original weight, and a couple inches taller. Jason was full of smiles and giggles. We headed down to Virginia Beach (it only took 6 hours instead of 3 1/2). Jason was born to travel. He was so calm the entire trip down, he didn't even complain about Mimi listening to Dr. Laura Podcasts =]

First up was surprising my sister. Mom and I kept coming up with different plans to surprise her, and when we pulled into the driveway, all plans went out the window as mom snatched up the car seat and ran off with Jason into the house. As I chase behind her and get into the house I hear my sister ask my mom why does she have a car seat? My brilliant nephew B chimes in "It's Jason!" One look from across the room and he knew it was him. I pop my head around the corner and see Jen burst into tears. She was sitting at the table with her husband working on party decorations for Emmy's birthday tomorrow. Needless to say decorations took a back seat. Not even five minutes of loving on him was Jen already changing a diaper, she was so happy to do so! Now THAT'S love!

Next up was dad! Mom "wanted to stop by and see his renovated kitchen." I walk through the back door and dad jumps out of his chair to the sound of my voice. I don't know what it is about surprises, but I love to do them! Dad grabbed Jason right away and pranced around the kitchen with him. Yes, he pranced. He then proceeded to take him to the bathroom and look at their reflections in the mirror. This was a frequent event during our stay. "Who's grand daddy's buddy? Are you grand daddy's buddy?" The bucket in my heart was over flowing with happiness and joy from just the first 36 hours being stateside.

Mom had to go south to North Carolina but would be back for the birthday party tomorrow. I claimed the guest bedroom and made myself at home. Chase had almost blown my cover about being home because he saw a picture my sister had posted on Instagram of her and baby J. So he wasn't surprised, but dad still was despite Chase dropping hints 4 minutes before I walk through the door.

It was getting late and I needed to go see my Aunt and Uncle so I could snag their spare vehicle. Aunt Mary was smitten over Jason, so much that I hated telling her we had to leave and get dinner and sleep.

Saturday morning we go to Jens house for the birthday party. The birthday girl loved seeing her cousin and just wanted to pet him and stick her finger in his mouth. She was so curious about him! Jen out did herself with Emmy's precious Strawberry Shortcake themed party. It was a great opportunity for Mimi to snuggle with Jason on the couch and Aunt Donna got her cuddles too. I was able to give my sister a helping hand in the finishing touches before everyone arrived. I was just so happy to be there. I let the world know how awesome my husband is for letting me make such a spontaneous trip. He claims that he is getting a 2 week break from my crazy but he just wants me to be happy.

Over the next week and a half, Jason got to meet his Aunts and Uncles: Jenny, Chase, Alan, Mary, Donna, Mike and Jackie, his cousins: Brendyn, Camdyn, Emersyn, and Aimee. As well as adopted Aunts: Kirsten, Kim, Amanda, Mercedes, Susie, and Gigi.

We stopped by grand daddys office to meet his co-workers. Everyone thought Jason looked smashing in his new hat. He and grand daddy even matched! They could have been twins if it weren't for the age difference!

Overall, the two weeks home was spent with friends and family, whereas I am normally out shopping or eating! It was so worth the money spent on tickets to be surrounded by so much love and happiness. Jason definitely missed his daddy. His eyes lit up when Matt picked us up from the airport.   Matt and I are over the moon that he adjusted to the time change immediately, both there and back! Ready for round two in October to go see our friends and family in Illinois.

Jason Celebrates Independence Day

Life is never dull with Jason. Last weekend Jason did a 5K. Matt is working very hard at pursuing a dream job in the Navy, and decided to participate in a run/walk/ stroll 5K. While Matt ran it, Jason and I walked/jogged it. Matt finished in 32 minutes, and I finished in 47. Nothing to boast about but it's a start, considering it was HOT and I don't run.

What face is that?
This past weekend was Fourth of July, and celebrating in Italy is different than in the states. Base has a celebration every year, but it doesn't fall on the 4th. Instead it fell on Saturday the 5th. Fortunately our favorite Hotel Agora loves fireworks and loves their American customers, and had a Fourth of July BBQ on Friday. Jason got to see his second set of fireworks and didn't bat an eye.

Saturday we spent the day with one of our favorite families here, the West Family. We cooked kabobs and ribs, and snacked on red, white and blue rice krispy treats that turned out pink, white and teal (fail!). Then we headed over to the base event, Festa Americana. Festa is held every year in Carney Park, which is located down the street from our house in a dormant volcano. There we listened to a couple bands perform cover songs, the kiddos rode a couple of rides, the dads drank a little too much beer and stood in line for 90 minutes waiting for a couple orders of chicken nuggets and fries.

While the guys waited for food, Jason, and the West kids watched a Hot Dog Eating competition. Afterwards the kids danced and, Jason and I boogied in the background. The main event was David Cook, who is American Idol Season 7 winner. David performed just as the guys made it back with food for the kids then it was time for Fireworks. The Navy did a great job with the firework display. It's not everyday you can say you got to watch fireworks from inside a volcano! Jason woke up just in time for the show, we muffed his ears worried about the sounds inside the hallow mountain, but it wasn't loud or scary at all and Jason again didn't bat an eye, cry or get remotely upset. He's a pro spectator!

Two months old and he has seen 3 displays of fireworks and 2 concerts already. Not a dull moment in the life of Spartacus!

On a side note, Jason has found his hands and loves to stick them in his mouth. He also has a favorite toy, a puppy dog that our friend Brian gave to us. You place the puppy dog on his belly and he immediately grabs for it, placing his hands on his ears practicing his grasp. He has the best smile and coos all the time. Mommy and daddy love our conversations with JD. He is starting to laugh, sounds like a squeaky toy almost and sticks his tongue out every now and then.

2 Month Check Up

Yesterday was a big day in the world of Jason. Matt added him to his Page 2. That means more COLA (Cost of Living Allowance) for us. Cha-ching! Then we enrolled him in Tricare. Yay for military health care. Some people complain about military medical but I am seriously grateful for it. I can only imagine the hospital bill I would have received after spending a week there from Jason's delivery. Wheeeeew- wee.

Anywho, after enrolling Jason in Tricare and assigning him a Pediatric Doctor, we applied for his Tourist Passport. We had to wait a month to get his Birth Certificate before we could apply for his passport. What is really weird is that his SSN is currently 000-00-0000. Jason doesn't have an identity yet for the United States. It's one of those weird things about living abroad. First we have to get his Birth Certificate, then apply for his passport. Once he has an "overseas identity" he will then be granted a Social Security Number. Seems SO backwards, but whatever floats their boat.

Jason went to his two month check up last Friday. He has grown 2 inches, measuring up at 22 inches, and he has put on THREE POUNDS! Now weighing 11 lbs 2 oz. After getting checked out the next thing on our list was shots...

Poor, sweet, angel baby had no idea what was coming. Jason received THREE shots back to back. Daddy had to hold his legs/knees to prevent Jason from kicking and bending a needle in his leg (standard preventative measure). Two shots in the right thigh, and one more on the left. He was SO not happy! Daddy quickly scooped him up and calmed him down. Cried for about two minutes before he could catch his breath. My heart broke for him.

Since Matt got to play the bad guy, it was only fair to let him soothe baby Jason. Jason slept, ate, and slept again. For some reason, three hours later he woke up wailing. Assuming the Tylenol wore off. Jason wailed and flailed for an hour. We gave him another dose of medication and kept trying to get him to stop crying. He cried so hard he gave us the quivering cry. Don't you know how much that breaks my heart? I run upstairs and get his bathwater ready. It's a couple hours earlier than we normally give him a bath, but I'm willing to try anything to get him to calm down. No sooner did he touch that warm water did he stop crying. A sigh of relief over came Matt and I. Jason took a nice long bath, put him in some jammies, and got ready for bed early.

He woke up today back to his good self.

Jason Conquers Italy With Pa

It's been a week since my dad left Italy. Since his departure, Jason, Matt and I have been getting back to a routine. I look back on the two weeks my dad was here and smile. We crammed a lot of places and activities into a short period of time, but left some time to just hang out with friends and family. Here is how our time together went:

Three AM and my alarm goes off, time to get up. Dad's flight comes in at 8:30, and I have to drive three hours to Rome to pick him up. One of the well worth it sacrifices to have dad come to Italy. Matt has to work so I have to give myself enough time to drive to the airport, deal with traffic, and have leeway for when baby needs to eat. Jason and I make it to the airport with an hour to spare, ended up waiting an extra hour while dad goes through customs and collect his luggage. I am beyond excited to have dad here- he doesn't fly and this is a major victory for him.

Dad clears customs, and gets his suitcase and meets Jason and I in the crowded arrivals section. Even with the hundreds of people looking for their taxis pick up, or those pushing their way through to find the train, time stopped for a moment when my dad finally met his grandbaby. And Pa was born. Though Jason was sleeping Pa instantly fell in love with his precious grandson. We headed back to Naples to let Pa take a nap- even with a Valium his Dr. gave him and a couple alcoholic beverages, he couldn't sleep on the plane. Dinner was our favorite little pizza shop around the corner, they let dad come behind the counter and watch them make and cook our pizza. A minute and 21 seconds in the brick oven and our dinner was cooked. Pa wasn't crazy over the simplicity of Neapolitan pizza. I wasn't in love with Neapolitan Pizza until the second round, I learned to appreciate the fresh ingredients and lack of preservatives.

VENICE

We hit the ground running when Pa arrived, the next day after Matt got off of work, we jumped in the car and headed North to Venice. Pa got to check out the Autogrill- which is a highway convenience stop. He became addicted to "Coca" (coke) and Hairbo Gummy Bears. We arrived in Mestre (just outside Venice on the main land) around 1030 PM, unloaded our car and found a restaurant down the road that was still open. Even though we had pizza the night before, that was all the restaurant was serving at this hour. It was still pretty darn good, and dad stepped outside his comfort zone and tried Italian beer.

Saturday morning we had slept in just a tad, and headed out the door to catch the train. Our hotel was very close to a train station, and there were only two stops between us and the Islands of Venice. First stop was lunch along the Grand Canal. Dad and Matt enjoyed lasagna and I had gnocchi. Lunch was delicious and pricey, but that's what happens when you dine in Venice with a gorgeous view. After lunch we caught a Vaporetto (water bus) to the island of Murano. Murano is known for its blown glass. A gentleman directed us to a factory down the road that was doing a free demonstration. It was pretty fascinating watching a ball of hot glass become a horse, or a vase. While browsing the glass shop, the Italians were drooling over how little Jason was. "Piccolo" they kept repeating. In fact, everywhere we traveled the locals would call him "Piccolo." I personally loved the attention. I know my son is adorable in my eyes, but it's nice to hear it from everyone else.

We ended up back in Mestre for dinner, and ate at the same restaurant as the night before. Dad tried another beer that wasn't a Budweiser brand- those are hard to find in Italia, and Matt and I got a calzone that ended up being an actual pizza, just rolled up- they were huge and delicious!

Saturday morning, we load up the car and check out of the hotel. Back to the train station to spend the rest of our day in Venice. With San Marcos on our radar, we followed a Google Maps walking trail and made our way. Over bridges, past cafes, and trying to stay in the shade along the way we finally reached the hustle and bustle of San Marcos Square. The line for the church was ridiculously long, it was just too hot to wait to see the inside of a church so we passed on that- plus we had the Vatican a few days away to see. I sat on the ground to feed Jason, we snapped a few pictures and made our way to the water to find a gondola. We instead took the Vaporetto back to the train station to get a bite to eat and make sure we stayed on schedule.

Our tummy's were grumbling for some food, so we stopped and had a bite. Dad found WiFi and Face Timed Aunt Mary and talked to her and Uncle Alan over lunch. Dad was pretty excited to brag about being in Venice. Up next before we left was to catch a Gondola. For 80 Euros, the four of us climbed onboard a Gondola and had a nice, relaxing 40 minute ride. We were able to see a side of Venice we hadn't been able to explore and I thought it was the best part of our trip thus far. 80 Euros well worth the money. Just glad we did it in the beginning of June because that sun was hot. The Gondolier gave me a lace umbrella to help beat the heat- I felt super fancy like Mary Poppins =]

PISA

When we returned from our Gondola ride, we said goodbye to Venice and drove across the country to Pisa. Our hotel was a rinky dink bungalow in Camp Darby. Don't get me wrong, we had a kitchen sink, small fridge and AFN on the TV, but no WiFi or cellphone service. The base is tiny and is now used mostly for recreational purposes. It was the hub to prepare and supply for Operation Desert Storm, now it is being considered to be closed down. Anyways, Camp Darby is only a couple miles from the City Center of Pisa. Pisa is one of my favorite places to take people. It's clean, friendly, easy to navigate, and just over all enjoyable. We reach the Leaning Tower as the sun is setting, Dad gets a quick Facebook picture before we sit down for dinner. After the sun sets is when I think Pisa is the best. The Towers' white marble contrasts against the black sky, it just looks so pristine and clean. Bonus is that there is barely anyone at the tower so late because you can't get a picture with the tower in the dark.

As we were walking around the Tower at night, there were these two guys, either drunk, high, or putting on a show. Either way they were performing "music" or something and were just entertaining to watch. I could have people watched them all day, trying to figure out what was being said by their slurred words. Dad got a kick out of them. But the police weren't having it.

The next morning dad was able to get his pictures holding up the Leaning Tower. I even got dad to partake in my favorite Pisa activity... giving high fives to people posing with the Tower! If you ever go there, give it a whirl, it's fun to do!

BORGO MAGLIANO RESORT

I found this quaint resort hotel in the middle of Tuscany, and decided to spend the night there. It had WiFi, working AC, a restaurant, and a gorgeous view of the land. After leaving Pisa we made our way to the middle of nowhere it seemed. Passing vineyards and olive groves, taking winding roads till we finally reached out destination. The resort was beautiful, and near by was a medieval town, up on a hill overlooking the sea. Since we could not check into our room just yet, we went to get lunch at this fortress looking town, Magliano. Too bad majority of the restaurants close at 1 pm and it was 2 pm.  We were fortunate to find a place with its doors open, who were willing to cook three more dishes just for us. The restaurant was Michelin Star rated, just bummed I didn't get the name. We dined in a garden courtyard. It was filled with the aroma of freshly bloomed flowers, shaded from the intense Tuscan Sun, and had a small viewing area to over look the many vineyards around us. Lunch was fantastic, as was dinner at the resort. Our waiter was very kind and quirky. His broken English and our broken Italian just made things a bit more comical. Dad ventured out of his comfort zone and tried something new, he had Risotto with Crab for dinner and a glass of house wine. The wine was great and came from the vineyard just outside the resort, so of course we bought three bottles (two of which dad took back to the states). Jason stuck with milk!

TERME SATURNIA

Since we were already in Tuscany, I really wanted to make a stop at the Thermal Springs. It is said that the Saturn or Jupiter God was disappointed at man fighting one another, so he threw a lightning bolt down to Earth, creating pools, and volcanic waters flow out of the ground, 800 liters a second at a temperature of 98 degrees. This created a place where man could go to relax and refresh instead of fight. The volcanic water is also said to have healing powers and people come here to heal.

We throw down or towels and start to make our way out into these pools. The bottom of the pools have tiny pebbles which weren't fun to walk on, nor was the rough rock that formed the edge of the pools. I really wanted to take Jason out into the water, so Matt finds a shady spot where we can hang out and relax and not worry about Jason being overly exposed to the sun. Our shady spot was close to the water fall, and not crowded with people (Italians sure do love the sun!). It gave us the opportunity to hang out in the water for a good 30 minutes, instead of dipping our feet in and leaving.

When it was time to move on, and travel down to Rome we walked back to the car, dried off and changed. We all smelled like sulfur, but it was the small price we paid to do something not many people get to do.

ROME

We find the apartment that we are staying at, didn't realize when booking it that it was a spare room in someone's apartment. The lady was Chinese and didn't speak English or Italian. Lucky for us we were able to communicate with translators on our phones. Technology these days, I tell ya... what would we do without it? Tonight;s agenda was to go to the Coliseum and get dinner at our favorite restaurant in Rome. And that is what we did! We get to the metro station just down the street and it doesn't take credit card. Poor Matt is sent on a wild goose chase to find an ATM, he gives up and we decide to walk to the Coliseum. Didn't realize how close we were to it, a nice twenty minute walk and we were there. It was later in the afternoon when we got there, we were able to quickly get a ticket and get inside. so nice to not have to stand in line, considering this was Matt and I's third trip to the Coliseum. We pushed Jason around the bumpy walkway in our Bob Stroller (Thanks for the Cadillac of strollers mom!) and took him out for a few pictures. Majority of he trip Jason has been carried around in the Ergo Baby Carrier- It just gets hot, so Matt and I take turns carrying him, and stopping to let him cool off. He never cried once in the carrier, we were just concerned with him getting overheated, or being in one position too long. Plus I like that Matt wants to be with the baby. He won't let me push the stroller (that is his job he says), and it lets him bond. Who wouldn't be ok with that?

Dad was in awe by how big the coliseum is, and amazed at such a structure being built so soundly in a time where there wasn't machines to help build. Quality in craftsmanship for sure! Around the corner is our favorite restaurant, we had a couple of plates each, trying out different food. Matt got to enjoy another bottle of house wine with dad, and I got my tiramisu! After dinner the sun was setting, so we hoped on the metro and headed to the Trevi Fountain.

The Fountain was crowded, as expected. I've seen the fountain during the day, but never at night so it was a treat for me to see it lit up. Matt and Jason went and threw in a coin to return to Rome one day (I'm sure we will!) and then I took dad down into the crowd to get a picture while Matt watched the baby and stroller. A lovely couple offered to take our picture, they were in Rome celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary and they were from Ohio. We chatted with them for a few minutes, and wished them well on their trip to Florence before we called it a night.

The following morning we again pack up the car and head out the door to enjoy our last day in Rome. This time we were off to visit the Vatican. It was Wednesday and every Wednesday the Pope speaks to the people, this is called the Papal Audience. I wanted to swing by the Vatican the day prior to get a ticket to attend, but didn't want to get there and be told that there are no more tickets (which are free by the way!) It's a good thing we didn't bother because the tickets are for seats in the center of St. Peter's Square- that have zero shade. So we mosey on up to the Square around 10:30 am and get to see the Pope talk to the crowd. We didn't need a ticket because there is standing room behind the seats, and coverage from the hot sun. The event ended at 11, and a good portion of the crowd headed to the Vatican Museum, which was next on our list! So we hustle, knees to chest around the corner to the entrance of the museum. But holy cow that line to get in!! There were people selling skip the line tickets, so I asked to see how much it would cost. Thankfully the gentleman noticed Jason in his carrier and told us that with the baby we get to skip the line! Yippee! That saved us at least an hour of waiting in line.

The Museum is cool, but having seen it a few times already Matt and I are bored with it. But In order to see the Sistine Chapel you HAVE to go through the Vatican Museum. And the Sistine Chapel is a MUST SEE. Dad also likes religious pieces. So we let dad see the museum at his pace, we give him info on things we remembered from a tour we took with Julie and Skyelar. When you get into the Sistine Chapel, you're not suppose to talk or take pictures. I couldn't help myself, I snuck in a few pictures inside the Chapel.

We followed a tour guide group out of the Chapel and into Saint Peter's Basilica. The Church had just opened up due to the Papal Audience, so we were one of the first people inside for the day. Dad got a front row view of PietA- The Madonna Holding Jesus. Quick fact, a crazy guy back in the 70's ran into the church, screamed "I am Jesus Christ" and took a hammer to the statue, broke one of her arms off from the elbow own, took a chunk out of her nose, . Since then the statue has been behind bullet proof glass, and the statue had piece from the back removed to repair the nose that was hammered off.

I'm pretty sure dads' breath was taken away when he walked into St. Peter's, he got camera happy and took pictures of everything. Inside is a statue of St. Peter himself, and a small line of people waiting to rub or kiss his right foot. I told dad to do what the Romans do and I will research why later. Well come to find out, those who rub or kiss St. Peter's right foot, are granted a blessing of 40 indulgences (40 days less in Purgatory). The statues right foot has been so worn down that the foot has been replaced once, and the current foot is completely smooth from the frequent visitors. Anyone got some Purell Hand Sanitizer??

All we had left to do in the Vatican was climb the Dome! I didn't realize this was an option until I saw some friends had done it. We paid the extra 2 euros a person to skip 1/3 of the stairs, but we still had 400+ steps up ahead of us! As you climb there are parts of the stair well that are so narrow, that a hand rail would get in the way, so as you climb up the narrow spiraling staircase, there is a rope for you to grab hold of. You get to a breaking point prior to that, which lets you see that you are standing over everyone inside the church. Such a cool vantage point. The ceiling is decorated with tiny, pinky fingernail sized mosaic tiles- Imagine being the person laying all of those tiles! As you keep climbing your way to the top of the Dome, the walls slant inward, and you are not only a bit claustrophobic, but now you are leaning sideways as you walk your way up the steps. But once you make it to the top, you have a spectacular view of Rome and the Vatican beneath your feet.

While at the top, I tell Matt that Jason needs a diaper change soon. The sooner the better since he is healing from a nasty diaper rash. Oh hey, there is a little stand off section in the shade on top of St. Peter's Basilica, why not change him here? Sure enough, I pull out our changing pad, a diaper, some wipes and a rash cream and change my baby's diaper. Then it happens. Yep. Jason peed during a diaper change. My son, peed on St. Peter's Basilica. He also farted in church we checked out in Venice. We got a major chuckle out of this. Not many people can say they peed on St. Peter's Basilica!

CAPUA

It was time to go back home. The menu for dinner was Chicken Shack. One and a half rotisserie chickens, some "crack fries," fried mac n cheese, and some mushrooms- Dad was in heaven. He hasn't cared much for the food in Italy. It lacks flavor he says (don't listen to him! It lacks preservatives). But Chicken Shack, he sure did enjoy every bite. In fact he said he wanted it at least one more time before he left (which he did). Everyone slept in the next day and did nothing but hang out around the house. Dad's time in Italy is already half way over!

Friday, we find our way out in Capua. I've been saving a trip out to Capua just for dad. He has talked about going there because of the HBO Series Spartacus, which he really enjoys watching, hence where the nickname Spartacus came about for baby Jason. Capua is significant because it is where the gladiator Spartacus fought, so it's only suiting that we take dad and baby Spartacus to Capua together.

The arena is very much so broken down. A lot of locals over the hundreds of years have come to the arena to take rock to build with. But enough is left to see that it was still a massive arena- just a few meters smaller than the Coliseum! The best part of Capua is that you have pretty much full range of the entire place. Where as the Coliseum you don't get to explore the center portion of the arena. We located a set of stairs that led us underneath the arena. There we saw various passage ways and cubbies where animals and gladiators were kept. It was very well preserved down there, and Matt says would be an awesome place to play paintball (or hide and seek).

AMALFI

Saturday was a long but relaxing day. I had booked us a day cruise around the Amalfi Coast. Ever since we arrived in Italy, I have wanted to see the Amalfi Coast from the water, we've driven it a few times but the coastal view is what I've longed for. We cruised out to the island of Capri where we had a swim call. Matt dove on into the "brisk" Mediterranean water, while dad, Jason and I stayed dry onboard. It's not every day you get to say that you swim in the Med Sea (unless you live here for all your life). Matt was happy to finally check this off of his bucket list.

We stopped to let some passengers off at the town of Positano, then we were let off in Amalfi. with a couple of hours to kill we grabbed a quick bite to eat and started to explore the town. The Amalfi Coast is well known for it's ceramics, and boy were there a bunch  of ceramic shops! I could go inside every single one of them and not be bored. We also passed a bunch of shops selling cellos, Limoncello, Meloncello, Strawberrycello, yum! I bought a few to have when we move back stateside. While shopping for cello, we saw a bride and groom walk through town after saying their nuptials. Always fun to see a wedding in Italy. Making our way back to the boat and head home, we stopped for a nice refreshing gelato and a picture op in front of the main church.

Sunday dad and Matt went golfing, while I stayed home and did chores with the baby. As you can see, Jason did laundry.

POMPEII

Pompeii is one of those sites that is so close to us, it's hard too come up with a reason not to go there with visitors. Again this was Matt and I's fourth time visiting the ruins of Pompeii, so we can easily walk through and skip over things, but for a first time visitor we have to remind ourselves that my dad or whomever is with us may want to see it at a slower pace. Dads state of mind is that everything looks the same, so we took him to the highlights and got out of there. It was just too hot to walk around Pompeii for hours. So thanks dad for understanding that everything looks the same and unless you have a tour guide, you really don't know what you are looking at.

Matt's paternity leave came to an end and he went back to work on Tuesday, dad and I went to base for a Dr. appointment, picked up some prescriptions, and Jason's super awesome looking birth certificate.

We took dad to dinner at the Osteria down the rod from our house. There you walk in, sit and they just start bringing you food at a set price. We dined on 15 different things, ranging from prosciutto, cheese, carrots, eggplant, to two differ types of pasta and three different types of meat. Dinner of course came with house wine and ended with a shot of limoncello in a chocolate cup.

Dads last day in Italy was a rest day. We hung out at the house, snuggled and kissed on the baby, and packed dads bags. Nerves were setting in again for dad. Mom sent me an email saying the flight attendants told her they would take care of him, and that he was in good hands. Thursday morning we drive up to the airport and Rome, and get dad checked in. I know how nervous my dad is and how unfamiliar he is with airports, I wanted to walk him to his gate but without a boarding pass I couldn't get pass the passport check point (which is before checking bags and getting your ticket). Dad said his goodbyes to Jason. "Grand-daddy loves you," he kept saying. I give my hug goodbye and cant help but to tear up. We can blame it on the hormones, but I know I'm just that much of a daddy's girl.

Time cant go by quick enough for Jason to make a trip to the States with us and see the rest of his family!
